In June 2023, Sentinel Homes took a bold step in wanting to manage our construction waste creatively and resourcefully, reducing landfill impact. We hired PJ as our Waste Manager,  and The Waste Project was born. Starting with a ute and trailer, and quickly upgraded to a hi-ab. Our efforts paid off with significant waste reductions.

The construction industry is notorious for waste, often due to outdated practices. The Waste Project aims to change that by managing excess material and construction waste, reducing landfill contributions, and repurposing salvaged materials. In our first year, we diverted 60-80% of waste, with half recycled and half repurposed or sold locally.

Our goal is to cut landfill waste per new house from 7.5 tonnes to below 1.5 tonnes in two years. We’re building cabins from repurposed materials, partnering with community initiatives, and creating a database for construction materials to find sustainable end-life solutions.
